2005 MACY'S PRESS RELEASE

79th Annual Macy’s Thanksgiving Day
November 24, 2005 – New York City

     The Kennesaw Mountain High School Band has been selected to participate in the 79th Annual Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade that will take place on Thursday, November 24, 2005 in New York City.  The parade will be travel from Central Park West through Columbus Circle, down Broadway and culminate in Herald Square at Macy’s department store.  NBC will again televise the parade live on Thanksgiving morning beginning at 9 AM.  The parade is considered to be “the longest running show on Broadway,”  featuring stars from television, Broadway, and radio. The famous, “Rockettes,” from Radio City Music Hall highlight this annual event that has become synonymous with Thanksgiving morning. 
     The Kennesaw Mountain High School Band was chosen among numerous applications submitted from across the United States.  Each year Macy’s chooses 10-14 high school bands from around the nation that will serve as musical entertainment for the parade and state ambassadors from where they reside.  Kennesaw Mountain was chosen on this their first time to apply.  This year the parade will highlight 6 other bands from the United States including The Hawaii All State Band, The Brooklyn High Steppers, NY, The 2005 DCI World Champion Cadets Drum and Bugle Corps, Ohio University Marching Band, John B. Alexander High School Band, TX, and Crestview High School Band, FL.
     The band director at Kennesaw Mountain is David Starnes, Associate Director is Jeff Harper, and Assistant Director is David Roth.  Kennesaw Mountain was opened in the fall of 2000 and since then the band program has participated in national marching band and winterguard events.  In the spring of 2003, the band was presented the prestigious Sudler Shield of Excellence by the John Philip Sousa Foundation that recognizes the top marching band programs in the United States.  The marching band was named the 2005 Bands of America Class AAA National Champions at the BOA Grand Nationals competition held annually in Indianapolis, Indiana.  In the spring of 2005, the Kennesaw Mountain winterguard was named the 2005 Winter Guard International World Champions for Open Class competition in Dayton, Ohio. 
     The concert band program, which numbers 4 ensembles, has participated in GMEA District festivals every year since the inception of the school and received consistent superior ratings in grades II-VI performance.  In January of 2006, the Kennesaw Mountain Jazz Ensemble will perform at the GMEA In-Service Conference in Savannah.
