Spring 2008 Syllabus
Objectives:
To further each individual student’s musical abilities and appreciation for music, music history and musical theory;
to foster and achieve performance excellence; to support and encourage the growth and development of each other through positive reinforcement and constructive criticism; and to maintain an environment conducive to learning and excelling in the rehearsal, understanding, and performance of music.
Grading:
Daily Participation/ Preparation: 60%
In class every day, on time (ready to play within 5 minutes of late bell), with required materials: instrument in working condition, ALL music, and a pencil on the music stand. Also required are a positive attitude, strong work ethic, and individual preparation of all music.
Daily participation grades will be recorded on a weekly basis (50 points per week—10 points per day).
Tests and quizzes: 15%
Periodic exams on such subjects as music theory, music history, scales, rhythms, and in-class musical playing tests.
Written assignments and class presentations: 15%
Periodic written assignments based on listening to a selected piece of music (done outside of school)
and periodic in-class presentations.
Final Exam: 10%
A mix of multiple choice and essay questions, given at the end of the semester.
Course curricula:
Rehearsal of a minimum two programs of music
Public performances (at least one evaluated by trained professionals)
General music history instruction (Gregorian Chant through modern music)
Listening assignments based on in-class recordings and professional recordings
Individual and ensemble performances in class on select days (counts as daily participation grade)
In-class sectional instruction with professional musicians
Performances and Symphonic Camp rehearsals:
Performances are an outgrowth of the classroom preparation. All students are expected to attend all scheduled performances and Symphonic Camp rehearsals. Work and sports are not considered excused absences. Students are expected to communicate this schedule to their work manager or sports coach. If there are conflicts, please see Mr. Roth at least one week in advance of the scheduled date. The day of the event is not the time to resolve an after school issue.

This class website will be continually updated throughout the semester. Assignments, music, listening examples, and other materials used during the semester will be posted HERE, not given out in class. It is vital that students have access to the internet and a printer during the semester. If this is a problem with this, please contact Mr. Roth so that other arrangements may be made.
