Bren Thomas
Dear 8th Graders,
Hello, my name is Bren Thomas and I am a 10th
Grader at KMHS. As a second year marcher, I have eventually come to find
out many interesting things about our marching band program. For starters,
believe it or not, band can actually be tons of fun! As a rookie marcher,
you will make plenty of friends you probably would not have made if it
weren’t for the marching band.
We spend so much time together, you cannot
help but make friends with each other. Apart from all the relationships you
will form while a part of the marching band, you will also acquire many
fundamentals that are necessary for a good attitude. Fundamentals such as
discipline, perseverance, patience, and responsibility are just a few of the
things you will take away from the marching band.
Band is not all fun and games, however.
Often called the “Kennesaw Mountain Weight Loss Program,” one has to be
mentally and physically fit to be a marcher. If you think you can just join
the band and not break a sweat or get muscle aches, you need a reality
check! To be brutally honest, marching band is like a military that plays
instruments. Over the course of the first year, I can guarantee that you
will experience your share of sunburns and “mild injuries.” Some days you
will work so hard you will discover parts of you that you didn’t even know
could ache.
So, if band is so hard, why join? For the
first time, I actually feel like I accomplished something great when I’m on
the field marching. With the marching band, you feel like you have another
family you can call your own. Like every dysfunctional family, however, you
have your good days and your bad days. Lucky for all of us our good days
outnumber the bad ones. There is no better feeling than the feeling you get
when you step off the field at Grand Nationals and you realize that the
blood, sweat, and tears paid off. As “PBS Afternoon Special” as it sounds,
the marching band is an experience you will never forget… I PROMISE!!!
Can’t wait to see all of you in May! Get
ready—it’s going to be one heck of a ride!
