STUDENTS' LETTERS

Andrew Creamer

My name is Andrew Creamer and I went to Pine Mountain Middle School.  I am currently a member of the Band Program at Kennesaw Mountain High School.  My directors want me to write a letter to all of you to get you to do band in high school.  Personally, I think you need to experience it firsthand to actually know how great it feels.  The marching band here is incredible.  There are so many good musicians here.  We got 4th in the nation, which is incredible, and we are going back to Grand Nationals next year.

The one thing that most people don’t like (but I personally love it) is all the hard work and tons of effort involved.  We rehearse 3 days a week for 3 hours, every week.  All the hard work pays off, though!  At a competition, when you are on the field during retreat, and they call out your name, I have never gotten any type of feeling like the one I get out on the field; it’s the most incredible feeling ever!  You can’t really understand it without actually being out there.  And as your band moves to the final set of the show (during performance), then the final note comes and it’s got such a good, refined tone that when you cut it off, it rings for 10 to 20 seconds.  You can’t be told what that feeling is like—you can only experience it.

The other part of band is the concert season in the winter and spring—the “etching” and “watercolor” seasons.  There are three bands: Concert Band, Symphonic Band, and Wind Ensemble.  All three of these are incredible bands that play really difficult but fun music.  There is also a feeling of great accomplishment here, too.  At festival, we perform what we have worked very hard on.  It’s really cool to see what kind of response we might get from an audience.

Another great thing about band is that it’s not made fun of anymore.  We are so big that we make up a huge part of the school population.  When I was in 8th grade, people would make fun of band.  Band wasn’t the “in” thing to do.  It still might not be the most popular, but it’s the best thing here.  People respect us for what we do, and for all the work that we put into band.

Sincerely,

Andrew Creamer
