PROFILE
A Commitment to Excellence and Innovation
Since the school's
opening in the fall of 2000, the KMHS band program has risen to national
prominence. The motto "A Commitment to Excellence and Innovation" has
been the philosophy of the students, parents, and directors of the band
program since the inception of the school. The vision, dedication, and
commitment to music performance and education has made the Kennesaw Mountain
program one of quality and HEART!.
As one of the marching band students stated, "Unless you've
experienced it, it is hard to understand the power of performance."
This
explains the heart and drive of our organization. The endless
hours of hard work and sacrifice of the parents, students, and staff have
created a special bond in our community. We all feel honored to be a part of
this ever-developing experience and are excited to see what is in the future
for the program.
Since the opening of the school, the band program has
grown is all areas. In 2000, there were two concert bands, an
82-member marching band, and a novice winterguard. Now, the band program has four concert bands, a 280+-member marching band, two competitive winterguards, and numerous small ensembles including jazz band, percussion
ensemble and woodwind and brass choirs.
Within the school's short history, the band has earned
numerous awards and recognitions. The concert bands have earned
consistent superior ratings at all festivals and evaluations and have
explored all realms of the concert band literature. The winterguard
has successfully competed in the Southeastern Colorguard Circuit and the
Winterguard International Circuit. Currently, the winterguard is
defending World Champions for Scholastic A and now promoted to Open class!
The marching band has made numerous appearances at Bands of America
regionals and three appearances at the Bands of America Grand National
Championships. Currently, the marching band is ranked 2nd in the
nation, and is the defending national champions of the Class AAA title
within Bands of America. One of the most prestigious honors for the band
program is being the recipient of the John Philip Sousa Foundation's Sudler
Shield. This national honor was awarded to the band for its excellence
in marching band over a three-year period.
"A Commitment to Excellence and Innovation" is not only a
motto, but a way of life for all involved in this special program.
When asked "what is it that makes this program so successful?", there can
not possibly be one answer. From the incredible administration,
enthusiastic parents, hard-working students, and staff with a vision, only
the start of something special is formed. Indeed! It is a privilege to
be a part of this history.
